Saving For WiFi

I'm saving about $18 per week toward a new computer. I've never tried wireless internet. The laptops are just way, way out of my league (I mean the Mac ones). But I'd like to get another Mac Mini, like the one I have, but upgraded with a WiFi card and a DVD burner and 80-Gig Hard Drive and 512 RAM. I'm currently without a Superdrive and have no Wireless receptor, and my HD which fills up all the time is only 40 Gigs and my RAM is only 256. Also I hear that the 1.4 is faster than my current 1.2. It'll take a while to save for a unit with all those upgrades on it. But I live one block from Union Square, and people tell me that you can get the signal from Union Square Free WiFi a couple blocks away, so I should be in the clear. I just cut off SBC and only use cell and Skype. It would be neat to dump Comcast and have free wireless. I mean, I'd happily pay for these services and even overpay. But the shitty customer service and the inflexible attitude of these big providers has got me miffed. And so frankly, since I'm actually on the internet a bit less these days, I might dig going way slower and just doing less surfing and not having to pay that $30 bill each month to people I despise.

    Shaku,
I have been in Union Square and picked up 12 unsecured wireless networks, so you should be able to connect just fine where you live.

Right, with all the coffee shops and high-end places around there. I never thought of it, but the place must be one of the more wi-fi intensive zones on the planet. How funny. Had I thought of that earlier I would have had it installed in the mac I just bought several months ago. But the great thing about mac minis is that they're so cheap you could just put $25 in the bank every week and then once a year simply toss the old one. So in fifteen weeks or so I should have enough for a new one anyway. I'm on cellphone and skype phone now, and although the both have problems and might turn off a few pals, I just love the thing of not being with ATT or SBC. Just any way around them. And to not be a Comcast slave anymore will be so hot, but I'll have to try it out first before I cut the chord to see if I can really handle going back five years in time in terms of speed.

Actually...you'll be with all of them! Just for free.

The main problem with the mini is that you can't use it like a portable...only semi so as you can take it over to other peoples places and hook up their USB equipment and monitor to it. The equivalent portables cost like three times as much unfortunately...

Yeah, I notice when you get up to actual iMac and Laptop, it's like around $1200, as opposed to mac-mini being around $500, (actually got my current one from a Montana retailer new, including shipping and no taxes, total to my door, $450). Besides, I think I'd best not get a laptop. I'm on the computer too much and so going out of the house is a way to escape the computer. If I had a laptop, I might be spiritually lost from the sheer temptation to never be off-line.

Good idea. I'm considering whether to take my portable on a long trip around the country...it would make things easier in some ways and more difficult in others. I've actually taken breaks of up to two months from my computer..s...but I'm hard pressed now to remember all my email passwords and such...maybe I should just forget them all and have a good time?
