after swearing for years I would not end up
that way. I bought a version of iWork to try
it out, and it seemed so inferior to Appleworks.
Plus, all the rumors about Apple finally
producing a class office suite all seemed
inconclusive. So now I'm finally, and very
slowly, transitioning over to Neo Office,
which really is turning out to be a very
nice program, and the price is right, (free).
Still, it's not as light and agile. It can do
more, but is still a bit clunky and slow.
However, it is compatible with Open
Office and all that futuristic stuff, and
so I'm leaning that way, unless Apple
miraculously has a change of heart
and releases a Mega-Appleworks
update.

Then, to get free phone calls, I hook up my headphones and my microphone to my mac mini and use that free internet connection to make Skype calls that are sometimes way better sounding than landline phones, especially if you have a great microphone. Then, as it turns out, most of the televised stuff I like to watch is downloadable, so there's no cable bill. And most of the radio stations I like are on internet too, so there's no paying for cable radio, which you often need to do when you live in a basement like me. Yeah so no gas, no electric, no cable tv, no internet provider and no phone company, just rent. It's like an ideal I wanted to attain for a long time.

The menus and basic controls often are not intuitive to me like computer stuff is. I put off buying a cell phone till just two years ago. I want to go all wireless. That would be exiting to me. So, admiring their mac, I go up and take a look at it. Well, now wouldn't you know it, they were "spinning" off of mp3s and iTunes! Which explained why the music sucked more than usual I guess. I hope. I mean I hope they're not using iTunes over the PA system there. It may sound good in ear-buds to the uninitiated...but, really, you have to care about sound and music to be a decent dj. Really. And not depend on compressed mp3s to help the patrons enjoy their drinks. Of course, maybe that wasn't the purpose at all.

My plea? Please use uncompressed original audio files if you are going to claim to be an audiophile. Otherwise, play in bars where the best thing to do is drink and try to avoid listening to the music.

But when I was saving at that rate, I seemed to be rapidly closing in on my next purchase. However, at $18 per week I notice I am losing ground, and hence am always just a couple hundred out of range. I'm up to like $550, however, the Mac Mini I want, for it to be a real upgrade from the one I have, has gone up to $799, and then there's SF and State taxes onto that, which bring it up to $870. Now by the time I get to $870, it may be that the package by then has gone up to $1,000. However, I have the consolation of knowing that in another year the used computers on ebay will eventually start to constitute and upgrade from my current model. However, there is some kind of karmic "just out of reach" law which plagues the religion of COMPUTERISM.

But I live one block from Union Square, and people tell me that you can get the signal from Union Square Free WiFi a couple blocks away, so I should be in the clear. I just cut off SBC and only use cell and Skype. It would be neat to dump Comcast and have free wireless. I mean, I'd happily pay for these services and even overpay. But the shitty customer service and the inflexible attitude of these big providers has got me miffed. And so frankly, since I'm actually on the internet a bit less these days, I might dig going way slower and just doing less surfing and not having to pay that $30 bill each month to people I despise.

Just found a mail-order joint and ordered my Mac Mini, the old 256 MB RAM one etc, but it's new. And I got it for $449 and that included shipping and taxes and everything. So I saved a hundred or so clams on that one. Other places go $499, but then after tax and shipping it still comes to the better part of a hundred bucks more. I'm pining away to get into Garage Band. But I hear I may have to save up for another Gig of RAM to get it to really work. I'm holding my breath.
